Arts for Health at Manchester Metropolitan University are the UK's leading arts and health consultancy specialising in research and development across this growing field of enquiry. Culture and the arts play a central role in flourishing societies. The health and social sectors are increasingly exploring new ways of working. The arts enable dialogue, stimulate debate and in health settings; humanise the clinical environment.
In partnership with the Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital, Alder Hey and St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals; Arts for Health is offering MMU under and post-graduate students and alumni, the opportunity to take part in a professional development programme exploring the skills needed to work as a commissioned artist in clinical health settings.
This introductory training module will give artists the opportunity to gain a theoretical understanding of health contexts in relation to their practice and equip them with the practical skills to pursue commissions and work opportunities in the health sector. Input from professional arts/health organisations has been secured for this course.
Between October 2009 and February 2010 two training programmes will be rolled out; each aimed at 12 participants and running over 6, 2-hour sessions, which includes visits to one of the two NHS partners.
What participants will gain:
- Strategic understanding of diverse arts and health practice
- How to identify opportunities within the NHS
- Appropriate marketing and presentation skills
- Concept development and critique
- How to evaluate, fund and sustaining practice
A key element of this training will be to respond to an NHS commission; including a full briefing, site visit, development and presentation of proposal and senior NHS staff feedback. There will be a £200 cash prize for one artist in each group based on the selection of our NHS partner.
October 09: Public Art in Health Environments (Group 1)

Cost: The course fee is £60 and includes transport and refreshments and once you have been accepted onto this course it is non-refundable. Cheques need to be made payable to Manchester Metropolitan University.
