St Helens Hospital - Artist's Profile
Claire Weetman
Internal Commission
Visual artist Claire Weetman produces drawings and structures that explore and respond to movement and space. Based in St Helens, she delivers arts projects and creative workshops alongside creating work for exhibition and commissions. Delivering arts projects for clients such as Liverpool Culture Company, Burnley Youth Theatre and Knowsley Primary Care Trust, plus many galleries, schools and communities, Claire has developed a track record of high quality work with groups of all ages.
Since her graduation from Liverpool John Moores University in 2003, Claire has consistently produced new artwork and exhibited across the UK. Recent installations have taken place at the Albert Dock, Liverpool, in a lift at Manchester Art Gallery in 2007, at Stuttgart City Hall in 2008 and at Novas Contemporary Urban Centre for the 2008 Liverpool Biennial.
Claire often produces her work in public spaces, responding to movement in that space. Recent works onto windows, Perspex sheets and tracing paper have traced the outlines of figures as they move past the picture plane, resulting in images of crowds of people moving through a space. Using layers, Claire's work has played with perspective and the effect of distortion and movement.
For her commission at St Helens Hospital, Claire will be focusing on movement and its antithesis waiting. From sketches and video collected on an exchange visit to St Helens' twin town of Stuttgart, a freestanding Perspex structure supporting line drawings will be created focusing on the movement of walking and the stillness of waiting.
